The First Light of Advent is the Light of Stones.
The light that shines in crystals, seashells, and bones .
The mineral world of Grandmother Earth is foundational to her workings and health.
The sands and soils are the skin of Grandmother Earth, holding everything in place and dancing with the fluidity of water. Sands and soils absorb and hold light and heat from Grandfather Sun, eventually transforming it into nourishment for plants.
Rocks and stones are the muscles and bones of Grandmother Earth. Stones and precious gems receive and hold energy. They are alive and able to communicate with you. Each has different energetic properties, and when worn they offer these for healing. Crystals are the brain cells of Grandmother Earth.
Seashells are bones from the sea. They have an eternal nature. Beginning as tiny bits of calcium, they evolve to form protective gear for marine creatures.
Bones are the unsung heroes of anatomy; living, active tissues that are constantly being remodeled and have many functions. They support the body structurally, protect vital organs, and allow for movement.
Connecting with stones, seashells and bones to learn from them
This is a mindfulness practice, a simple moment of connection with intentional curiosity to experience the light energy within stones, seashells and bones, by activating the senses and encouraging personal growth and discovery. Nature always orients to light, and will compassionately interact with and respond to you. It will reflect your light, such that you may find it within yourself.
This practice can be done outside on a walk, sitting in a garden or inside your home.
It can be done once or several times throughout the week with different objects.

Begin by setting an intention. Energy flows where intention and attention goes.
Recite the verse:
The First Light of Advent is the Light of Stone.
The light that lives in crystals, seashells, and bones.
State out loud or quietly to yourself that like nature you're honoring the rhythm and cycles by turning inward — anticipating the return of the light on the Winter Solstice. You are a seeker of light with a desire to learn from stones, seashells or bones.
Allow your attention to be drawn to a rock, a gem set in a favorite necklace, a semi-precious stone, a sea shell, or perhaps one of your own bones.
Hold the item or lay your hand on your body to feel the desired bone.
Find a comfortable place to sit or stand, take a few deep breaths, clear your mind and settle into your body.
Speak aloud or to yourself. Thank the stone, shell or bone. Let it know that you’re curious about what it knows about light. Ask it to teach you in pictures, words or sensations.
Allow yourself to be open and receptive. Responses can come quickly and can be either subtle or obvious. The information may come through any of the following:
your physical senses (touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing)
internal senses (what's happening within your body)
intuitive senses (seeing images, colors or symbols, feeling physical sensations, hearing messages with words, clear knowing)
emotional senses
Acknowledge whatever you receive.
For example: “Wow, I get a sensation of tingling on my head when I hold you. Thank you.”
Keep the conversation going by asking more or clarifying questions.
For example: That sensation I feel in my crown chakra… Is it a way to let more light in?
If you feel you are not receiving anything, ask the stone, bone or shell to turn up the volume on the response and communicate it in a way that you can understand it.
Keep breathing, receiving, acknowledging and engaging until you feel complete.
Place a hand on your heart, turn your attention inward and ask your body what new understanding it has of light from this item.
Then say out loud. "I connected and learned _________________ about light from this stone/bone/ seashell. My experience is real and true because I experienced it.”
Thank the item for sharing its wisdom and thank your body for being receptive.
Return the item to where you found it or ask its permission if you’d like to take it home.
Take a moment to journal about your new understanding of light. Other ways to explore the light with fruits, vegetables, grains and flowers is to hold them and ask the questions above. Or tune into them while cooking or eating.
